Global Warming is part of the greenhouse effect. The greenhouse is a natural cause that has been going on for million years. The earth has an atmosphere. In the atmosphere there are gases. These gases are carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), ozone, water vapour and nitrous oxide (N2O). What happens is when the sun shines its light on earth, earth absorbs the heat but some heat is reflected back, and this heat stays in the atmosphere, to keep earth warm.

Ummmm…. You wanna mention oxygen as well. Or we wouldn’t be able to breathe!! And I think you mean Nitrogen.
The atmosphere has a lot in it the ratios are 78% Nitrogen, 21% Oxygen and 1% other gases.
The greenhouse effect is a natural process and we do need it to a certain extent. The worry about the greenhouse effect is more the “extent” rather than the process itself. There are a lot of reasons why the problem is getting bigger and the worry is getting greater…. ummm, how to put this concisely…?
You know about the water cycle right? Water goes up, water comes down. Well, when it goes up it’s called evaporation. This happens when it is hot enough…. right?
Well, when things are working well, the earth is heated, the water evaporates, excess sunlight (more accurately infared which is the hot part of light) reflects back into space, bouncing off clouds, water, ice and the earth itself.
The problem is that any gas in the atmosphere that has more than ONE BOND traps this excess radiation (that peskee infared) and stores it as heat. This heats up the atmosphere even more causing a greater evaporation rate. This would be fine until you really think about what water is.

Which is one Oxygen atom with a bond to two hydrogen atoms. As you can see water has more than one bond… in other words water is able to store radiation. Water is a “greenhouse gas”. Every primary school evaporation experiments contribute to the greenhouse effect.
Unfortunately, we can’t stop water from evaporating. We are however responsible for putting other gases into the atmosphere. And those molecules with the most bonds can do the most damage because they can store the most radiation. Check out the molecular structure of the more common human related gases and you’ll start to see the problem.
As these gases are put into the atmosphere the atmosphere heats up and if the atmosphere heats up the surface temperature also rises and so does the evaporation rate -which leads to higher amounts of water vapour (the greenhouse gas) in the atmosphere – which in turn means the atmosphere heats up more – the surface temperature heats up more – the evaporation rate increases – which in turn leads to more water vapour in the atmosphere…….etc. Can you see the cycle?
This is the problem that everyone is hoping is just a theory. The theory is called the “positive feeback loop”. And everytime it happens it makes the situation worse. Nitrogen and Oxygen are fine however as they are N2 and O2 which only have one bond. N-N and O-O.
