how do i check my front brake calipers?
to see if they are sticking and how do i get them to ‘unstick’ ?
once they are functioning like normal ,is it okay to drive eventhough they had already done damage to that one rotor?
Calipers usually only stick when they are fully extended (brake pad worn out). Remove the wheel and the cap of your brake master cylinder and then use a small pry bar to depress the caliper hydrolic cylinder. Brake fluid will push back up into your master cylinder so if you have refilled it you will need to either remove some fluid or have something there to catch the overflow. It is usually a good idea not to refill your master cylinder between brake jobs because you can use that as an indicator of brake wear without removing your wheels. Anyway, when the caliper is fully depressed, replace the brake pads. A rotor can sustain substantial damage and still be usable, because grooves in the rotor increase surface area and actually increase braking surface. Use your common sense. On a grooved rotor the new pads will take a few weeks to seat into the grooves properly so you might have slightly diminished braking capacity or a squeeky brake for a bit.
Now for the important part, the caliper is sticking not because of some internal damage, but because the area that the caliper slides on is dirty and has no lubrication. Clean the slides with a wire brush or piece of fine grit sand paper or emory cloth, lubricate the slides with lithium grease (usually included with the brake pads) and reassemble. Dont forget to replace your master cylinder lid, pushing the rubber back up into the cap before securing. Hope this helped.
PS. WD-40 is a good rust remover, so you can use that as a solvent or cleaning agent on the slides in addition to the wire brush or sandpaper, however it will do no good on the caliper piston(not something that needs lubrication because it is already full of hydrolic fluid and is sealed) and you still need to use the lithium grease on the slides. WD-40 is flammable and evaporates rapidly so it will be only a temporary fix.
I am sure you are cabable of doing this job, it is one of the easiest jobs on the car and only requires a couple wrenches and the afore mentioned prybar.
